Bias, privacy & responsible lending
AI can widen access to credit — or quietly automate unfairness. These principles shape how SmartCredit Ai is designed.
Bias & fairness
- Historical lending data can encode past discrimination; a model trained on it may repeat it.
- Proxy variables (PIN code, phone model, surname, college) can indirectly reveal caste, religion, gender or region.
- Alternative data can include the underbanked — or exclude people without smartphones or formal rent agreements.
- Mitigation: exclude protected attributes and known proxies, test approval rates across groups (disparate impact), and audit models regularly.
- SmartCredit Ai never uses age, gender, religion, caste or location in its score.
Privacy & data protection
- Collect only what is necessary (data minimisation) and state the purpose clearly.
- Obtain explicit, informed and revocable consent — especially for SMS, contacts or transaction data.
- Follow laws such as India's DPDP Act 2023 and RBI digital lending guidelines; allow access, correction and deletion.
- Secure data with encryption, access controls and limited retention.
- In this demo, all inputs stay in your browser and are never stored or transmitted.
Responsible lending
- Lend within repayment capacity — FOIR caps prevent over-indebtedness.
- Explain decisions: applicants deserve to know the reasons for rejection and how to improve.
- Keep a human in the loop for borderline or adverse decisions and offer an appeal route.
- Disclose the full cost of credit (APR, fees) transparently; avoid predatory pricing.
- Monitor model drift and outcomes after deployment, not just before.
Discussion questions
- Should a lender use social-media or phone metadata to judge creditworthiness?
- Is a slightly less accurate but fully explainable model better than a black box?
- Who is accountable when an algorithm wrongly rejects an applicant?
- How can alternative data include the unbanked without becoming surveillance?
